History

History and Development of the Educational Management Study Program

The history of the Educational Administration Department is inseparable from the history of the Faculty of Education. The Faculty of Education was formerly called Fakulteit Pedagogik under the auspices of Gajah Mada University (UGM). Fakulteit Pedagogik opened on January 23, 1951, when it was part of the Faculty of Literature, Pedagogy, and Philosophy (SPF). On September 19, 1955, the Faculty of SPF underwent development, marked by its division into separate faculties. Therefore, every September 19th is commemorated as the Dies Natalis of FIP Yogyakarta State University.

In January 1962, FIP UGM was reorganized into three faculties: the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Physical Education, and the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP). Subsequently, through a series of Presidential and Ministerial Decrees, it was decided that the Teacher Training Institute (IPG) in Yogyakarta and Solo, FIP, and FKIP UGM would be unified into one entity named IKIP Yogyakarta. The establishment of IKIP Yogyakarta was inaugurated on May 21, 1964, by the Minister of Higher Education and Science (PTIP).

On December 6, 1965, through the Rector's Decree of IKIP Jogyakarta No. 05 of 1965 concerning the Structure and Organization of IKIP Jogyakarta, the Educational Administration (AP) Department was officially established. Initially, the AP Department was prepared to provide teaching staff for Educational Administration subjects. Since SPG and SGO (teacher training schools) were abolished, the AP Department shifted its focus from training prospective teachers to management (preparing managerial staff) for educational units and organizing institutions, both public and private. AP graduates are expected to master administration and managerial aspects and internalize educational aspects that support the precise management of educational units and organizing institutions.

In line with international trends in educational management, which favor the term Educational Management over Educational Administration, and the government's dissemination of School-Based Management, the AP Department proposed changing its name and study program from Educational Administration to Educational Management. The proposal was also intended to preempt misunderstandings in interpreting Educational Administration. On July 27, 2005, a letter from the Director of Academic and Student Affairs Facilities was issued, marking the official establishment of the Educational Management Study Program under the Educational Administration Department, Faculty of Education, Yogyakarta State University.

The S1 Educational Management Study Program's quality is recognized nationally and internationally. Besides being accredited A by BAN PT, since 2020 the S1 Educational Management Study Program has also held the ASIC international accreditation certificate (Accreditation Service For International Schools, Colleges And Universities) with the predicate premiere institution.

Following the transformation of Yogyakarta State University from a Public Service Agency (BLU) to a Public University with Legal Entity Status (PTNBH), the designation of 'Jurusan' (Department) changed to 'Departemen' (Department), referring to Government Regulation Number 35 of 2022 concerning the Legal Entity Public University of Yogyakarta State University. Therefore, the S1 Educational Management Study Program is now under the auspices of the Educational Administration Department, Faculty of Educational Sciences and Psychology, Yogyakarta State University.
